At fifteen, Abigail Morgan has learned doing what is right always comes at a cost. Still she is determined to keep her promise to God to take care of her brother Samuel. But when God derails her plan of heading west to start over in Portland, she's forced to trust the charity of the sisters of St. Catherine's Orphanage for the winter. Abigail quickly learns there are no secrets among orphans. But Abigail has secrets she will go to great lengths to keep anyone from knowing, especially Samuel. After his ma's death, Matthew Mason found healing in becoming a healer like her. Between assisting his pa and the education provided by the sisters of St. Catherine's, he is on track to become the second doctor Bear Valley desperately needs. But as much as Matthew wants to become a doctor, he would trade it all for a closer relationship with his pa. When a simple misstep sends Matthew's certain future colliding with Abigail's uncertain one, God teaches them to stop running, be still, and trust that He is the true healer of our wounds.

In this historical novel set in the 1920s, a brother and sister on the run are stranded in a small Montana town and taken in by a woman who works in a Catholic orphanage. 15-year-old Abigail has managed to hold it together despite the trauma she's faced in the past year or so at the hands of the people who were supposed to protect her -- until she reaches the safety of the orphanage. She's not the only one suffering, however; the local doctor still grieves the loss of his wife and isn't sure how to deal with the upcoming separation from his son when the young man goes off to college. This is a story of compassionate healing on many levels, and the human ability to heal others even while the healer is suffering.

Surviving the Stillness The Seasons of Healing Series Volume 1 Jessica White 9781500183462 Books Reviews

Not as interesting as I thought it would be. The story lagged and needed more details. I think she has definite talent, just needs a little more
experience in the field.
I loved Surviving the Stillness by Jessica White. The story is set in the 1920's. It is a story of faith, love, courage, and hope.
The characters are very lovable. I had to find out what happened to Abigail. Her fears about her past were causing both physical and emotional health issues. I wanted so much for Matthew and his grieving father, Dr. Mason to be able to work things out between them.
If you like sweet ,spirit filled stories with a touch of suspense, you will love this book. Can not wait for the next book to come out.
I don't like writing reviews, but had to do this for this book. First - my thoughts before I started OK. I'm going to read this book because a good friend of mine knows the author. It's set back in time - not my favorite. It's about a 15 year old girl - hmmm, not really my interest. No high expectations for this book; just keeping it real.

It didn't take many pages into the first chapter to capture me, and I didn't want to put it down. The characters were fleshed out beautifully and drew me into their lives in a very real manner. The story line? Excellent. I highly recommend this book.
Story of hardship and intense prayer and belief. Siblings, Abigail and Samuel, are on the run. Young Matthew is studying to be a doctor. He is taking after his father's profession. Father and son devote time to the convent that houses orphans. When Abigail becomes sick, father and son dedicate their time to uncover her pain from the past. Will she get better? What future will brother and sister have?
Where is God when we suffer? Where are we when our friends suffer? Surviving the Stillness, part medical mystery, part inspirational (platonic) love story, traces the journeys of Abigail Morgan and Matthew Mason as their lives collide at St. Catherine's Orphanage. Abigail has a secret past that jeopardizes both her health and her future, and Matthew, medical assistant to his grieving father, is charged with the difficult task of being both friend and healer.

Jessica White delivers a gentle, satisfying story that meditates on love, loyalty, trust, courage, and healing - all as part of God's magnificent plan. Surviving the Stillness is a solid first effort with well-developed scenes and characters as well as interesting historical detail. Readers will have to overlook some punctuation/editing flaws, but the story makes doing so worth the effort. (**Note My review was made on an early edition, which has been edited since.**)

I look forward to the next book in the series!

Jessica White weaves together a moving tale of four hurting people thrown together through circumstsnces only God could orchestrate. Inside the walls of a Catholic orphanage, a lot of healing takes place, for the doctor as well as his patient and both of their family members.Though the numerous typos and editing mistakes often took me out of the story, her excellent scene descriptions and dialogs quickly drew me back in each time. I highly recommend this book and look forward to more from this author.
Surviving the Stillness book review

Surviving the Stillness is a deeply thoughtful, moving story of two young people in 1920s Montana coming to terms with their past and growing ready to face their future. Abigail Morgan is on the run with only one goal--to keep her younger brother safe, both from the past demons that dog them, and from even knowing about the danger. But her plans run awry when near-starvation and ill health force them onto the mercy of the sisters at St. Catherine's Orphanage for the winter. Little does she know their arrival at St. Catherine's is not an accident after all.

Matthew Mason's determined journey toward medical school is often hindered by his troubled relationship with his doctor father, the latent grief of losing his mother, and the balancing act innate in his half-Sioux heritage. But when his life and Abigail's become intertwined, together they must find the path towards healing of body and soul, and discover that sometimes God places us in seasons of stillness so that we can learn to hear His loving voice.

Surviving the Stillness is definitely a story of the characters' inner journey, not a fast-paced, plot-driven novel. But I found myself touched by the real-ness of the character's struggles, as well as their encounters with Christ. Many nights reading just a bit more of this book calmed my soul, and even now thinking about the story touches my heart with something of that stillness--as in "Be still, and know that I am God"--that Abigail and Matthew discover as well. I look forward to reading more from Jessica White.
